 CANADA'S FIRST GEOTHERMAL COMMUNITY
Residents start saving 50% on energy costs the day they move in.
Geothermal technology is as old as the caveman and involves tapping into the solar energy naturally stored beneath the earth. Every home sits on a major source of energy, your own backyard. No matter where you live, the underground temperature stays relatively constant all year, even though the outdoor temperature varies widely. At Sun Rivers the underground temperature is a relatively constant 13 degrees year round. Geothermal systems harness this relatively constant, renewable energy source, and use it for heating, air conditioning and hot water.
Geothermal systems circulate a water-based solution through a "loop" of small diameter underground pipes. When heating, this solution absorbs heat from the earth and carries it to the geothermal unit, which (through a processmuch the same as a refrigerator) compresses the extracted heat to a high temperature and delivers it to the home. When cooling, the process is simply reversed, and the resulting cool, dehumidified air is delivered to the home. In the winter the earth beneath the ground is used as a heat source’ and in the summer a heat sink. Each home at Sun Rivers has their own individual closed loop system drilled vertically within the lot lines. The geothermal ground loops are installed and paid for by Sun Rivers and are treated just like any other utility.
